Stand Up for the Cure

On May 2nd, ECOXGEAR participated in the 4th annual Stand Up for the Cure in Newport Beach. This was our second time participating in Stand Up for the Cure. With over 1,000 attendees, people came together to raise funds SUFTCand awareness for early breast cancer detection, research, treatment, and education. The day consisted of standup paddling, live music, food, and drink with over $100,000 being raised this year.

Founded in 2011, the mission of Stand Up For the Cure is to have fun paddleboarding while raising awareness and funds in support of Susan G. Komen. Every $125 Stand Up for the Cure raises goes towards enabling a mammogram.

Our very own ECOXGEAR brand ambassadors, Zane Schweitzer and his sister, Shelby Schweitzer were in attendance as usual, heading up the Schweitzer Clinic which offers free SUP boarding lessons. The famous Schweitzer family of Hawaii, known for being world champions in surfing, windsurfing and paddle boarding has been a part of the event since the get go.

Zane, a world champion SUP boarder, came up with idea to offer free clinics at the event to women who were recovering from cancer as SUP boarding is very therapeutic physically and emotionally. Shelby helps him do the clinics as well.

“We all came up with the idea over dinner one night after Judie, the founder of the event, and a dear family friend, revealed the shocking news that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer,” Zane explained. “Luckily Judie is OK now. The event has grown into a really successful fundraiser and we’ve caught more than one case of melanoma just in time. We’re just really proud to be a part of something that saves lives.”
